Warm and Cool Color Palette

This palette organises colour by temperature: warm hues on one side, cool on the other, with a neutral in the middle. It is a composition tool before it is a harmony.

Temperature creates depth

Warm colours advance, cool colours recede. Combining both gives you a foreground and a background without touching size or shadow. Illustrators have used this forever; in interfaces it helps separate active from passive content.

How to use it

Pick one dominant temperature for the whole page and keep the other for whatever must stand out. A cool background with warm calls to action is a combination that works almost every time.
